WHAT IS A FLATBACK STUD?

Flatback studs are stud earrings with a flat backing vs. a standard stud earring with a butterfly back where the post sticks out (see image below).

Studs offers two no-poke flatback stud options (standard and reversible) for fun, fashionable, and versatile Earscaping.

Choose from dozens of styles to personalize your Earscape from front to r(ear) for endless Earscaping possibilities!

NOTE: The flatback studs sold on our site are for fully healed piercings only!

WHY DO WE LOVE FLATBACKS?

Because of their flat backing, they’re extra comfortable to wear all around your ear, (especially in advanced piercing placements like the conch, tragus, and helix), because they don’t poke behind your ear. They’re comfy enough to sleep in and durable for everyday wear, making them a great option for those who prefer not to switch out their earrings on a daily basis!

WHY DIFFERENT POST LENGTHS?

Every ear is different! The flatback post length that best fits your ear will depend on your unique ear anatomy (ear thickness) and the angle of your piercing.

Each Flatback Stud comes with a 6mm and 8mm post so you can choose the best fit for your own ear. (We also offer a 10mm post that can be purchased separately for those who may need a longer post; it is approximately the height of one Skittle!)

P.S. The posts on our butterfly back styles are NOT compatible with flatback posts!

GENERAL SIZE GUIDE*

Here’s a general guide on which post lengths may fit best in certain piercings.

*REMEMBER: everyone’s ear is unique and these suggestions may not be your best fit! We suggest consulting a professional piercer if you’re unsure which length is best for you.

P.S. FLATBACK POSTS ARE THICKER

Our flatback posts are 18 (18g) gauge and thicker than butterfly back posts (which are 20g). The smaller the number, the thicker the post!

Check the 'DETAILS & MATERIALS' section to confirm the gauge of the style.

Due to the thickness, you may need help from a professional piercer to insert a flatback stud. We offer jewelry change services to safely swap out/insert your earrings. Book a jewelry change at a location near you.

STANDARD FLATBACK STUD ANATOMY

All of our standard flatback studs come with one (1) pre-bent top, one (1) 6mm flatback post, and one (1) 8mm flatback post, so you can choose the best post-length that’s fit for your own ear.

REVERSIBLE FLATBACK STUD ANATOMY

All of our reversible flatback studs come with one (1) pre-bent top, one (1) 6mm flatback post, OR one (1) 8mm flatback post. Visit a Studs Studio for personalized fit assistance with a Studio team member!

WHY IS THE TOP PRE-BENT?

The pre-bent post creates spring tension to secure the top into place inside the post! Here is the half section view of a flatback stud where you can see how the bent top sits inside of the post:

HOW TO INSERT FLATBACK STUDS

  1. Push the flatback post through the BACK of your piercing

  2. Once the post is peeking through the front of your piercing, carefully take the top and insert the pre-bent part into the post’s opening

  3. Firmly push both ends together with your finger, then gently tug both ends to make sure it’s secure

Check out our video instructions here:

IS YOUR EARRING SECURE?

If your flatback stud feels a little loose, you may need to re-bend the ‘top’ in order for it to be secured! Here’s how:

1. Insert the earring top about 1/3 of the way into your flatback post, 2. Bend the stem of the earring top by applying some pressure while it's slightly inserted into the post, 3. Pull the top and flatback post apart. Now you can re-insert your earring. If the earring feels secure, you are good to go!

PRO TIPS

  1. Don’t insert your flatback studs over a sink in case you drop a piece!
